Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

GB-509,945 Jul. 25, 1939 Improvements in rotary driving connections between axially movable parts Samuel Lindon Manchester, England This mechanism replaces a spline drive. The axially-moving driven shaft has an overlapping-cylinders cross-section, and the quill has a matching hole. The peculiar overlapping-groove construction allows the driven shaft to be machined on a lathe using two pairs of centers, each slightly offset from the original center of the shaft. The hole in the quill is formed by similarly offset boring operations. In this way, both quill and shaft can be manufactured entirely on a lathe.
