$1050 OBO
South Bend Model 420-AN
Serial No. 53267
Manufactured in 1934

This great machine is a bit much for this beginner metalworker so I hope it will land in one of your shops soon. My intent is to start with something smaller and work up as my skills and interests grow. As such, I'm willing to entertain trade proposals for a small and complete lathe - South Bend?, Atlas/Craftsman come to mind.

From my research, this beautiful lathe is rather uncommon and was manufactured by South Bend for less than 2 years. I had planned to restore and use it but other projects have taken priority. The lathe is in great condition but would be spectacular if restored or tuned up and used as intended.

Some history, from a respected UK lathe site: "At around the time that the precursor to the most successful South Bend lathe of all was being launched, the Model 5, Type 405, the Company were also working on a new small lathe, the Series 20 Toolmaker. When introduced in early 1934, under Catalog No. 520, this new machine was priced at $158, this being twice the cost of an equivalent capacity if basic 405 that was listed at $75. Although the Toolmaker was shown in the 1934 Year Catalogue, by the middle of 1935 it had disappeared, perhaps setting a record for the shortest production run of any South Bend model."

This is a 420 series lathe, indicating it was sold as a bench lathe (the 520 models were mounted on cast iron legs).

Includes various tooling, chucks and gears, as well as the original leather drive belt. The lathe was operated at the time I purchased it but the motor assembly is currently detached. The 6th photo shows the attached motor, with the lathe under power. A short operating video is available, if needed.

This lathe is very heavy (over 350 lbs) so the buyer should come prepared and with help. Prefer selling locally but willing to work with Ruckers with full payment and if hold time is reasonable.
