Long before Bridgeport, Becker-Brainard was the big name in milling machines (see the attached ad). A friend ended up with a Becker-Brainard Horizontal Milling Machine #4-1/2. Made between 1888 (when patented) and 1908 (when Becker-Brainard dissolved). Unbelievable condition for an approximately 120 year old machine. Could be museum quality with a little cleaning, never seen anything like this. Surprisingly modern-ish 3-axis precision machine that could still make serious chips. I was suprised in a 1915 book, "Preicision Toolmaking" how accurate machinists were in those days, and how these machines were used with end mills or arbors. Has high speed traverse, not sure if this model has power crossfeed. The Paint is nice, frosting on ways clearly visible, I don't think it has been used much, see 1st photo. Brainard's US Patent #381525 tells about machine, see pics. Previous owner converted to electric motor (variable speed still handled by belts), could be easily removed for original overhead belt drive. Some tooling included. The main crank handle is missing (or it might be in the shop), but could adapt modern or antique handles from MSC, Amazon or Ebay. $1200 OBO. (Also a similar later and larger model Brainard #25 available, some old drill presses, a small Delta and a small South Bend lathe, and would consider package deals if you can make the trip.) |
