In 1896 the Phelps Machine Co. licensed the Dake engine, a clever and compact steam engine design from the Dake Engine Co. of Grand Haven, Mich., a company that would later become Dake Corp., known for their arbor presses and hydraulic shop presses. Phelps manufactured the Dake engine for the Canadian market for just a couple of years: at the beginning of 1898 it was announced that the business had been sold to the Jenckes Machine Co. of Sherbrooke, QC, which continued the manufacture of the Dake engine.
