253,581 Feb. 14, 1882 Vise Calvin L. Butler Greenfield, MA An example of this patent hand vise turned up in a Martin Donnelly auction. As seen in the photo, the vise is marked only with the patent date. The inventor would, much later, establish the Butler Chuck Co.
356,616 Jan. 25, 1887 Drill-chuck Calvin L. Butler Greenfield, MA It appears that once the patent expired, the inventor established Butler Chuck Co. and began manufacturing this chuck himself. We don't know if the assignee, who owned Skinner Chuck Co., ever manufactured the chuck. Skinner received an 1888 chuck patent 381,857, that he definitely manufactured.
