From 1878-12-14 Scientific American

In 1878, Messrs. Oliver & Co. (Limited), of Chesterfield, England, were operating the Victoria Foundry (earlier it was the Broad Oaks Iron Works) and manufacturing a saw bench (table saw) with a patent stock-feeding mechanism. The same patent was also being used by John McDowall & Sons of Johnstone, Scotland.

In 1889, the business and foundry of Oliver & Co. were acquired by the newly formed Markham & Co., Ltd..

  • 1879 The Trades' Guide for Midland Counties, under "Engineers": "Oliver & Co., (limited), Viotojria Foundry Chesterfield".
  • 1887-01-01 The Marine Engineer has an article on powering steam engines by liquid fuel and mentions that Oliver & Co., of Chesterfield, had conducted tests showing that one ton of oil did the same work as 2.6 tons of Midland coal.
  • The 1902-03-22 Engineering and Mining Journal has an article on a colliery in Nanaimo, BC, Canada: "In the engine house are two Oliver & Company Chesterfield engines of 300 horse power each; two others of the same size and pattern, but built in Peterboro, Ontario, are used at Protection Island shaft".
  • 1889-11-09 The Chemical Trade Journal: "MARKHAM AND CoMPANY, LIMITED.—This company was registered on the 31st ult., with a capital of £60,000., in £10 shares, to acquire upon terms of an agreement between C. Paxton Markham, of Chesterfield, ''' Whitehead, of Preston, the business of Oliver and Company, Limited, of the Broad Oaks Iron Works, Chesterfield. The subscribers are:— Shares.
