In 1867 James Martin & Son were operating the Ontario Steam Engine and Machine Works on Queen Street East in Toronto.

  • 1872 Might & Taylor's Toronto Directory lists Ontario Engine Wrks, J Martin & Son, proprs, at 223-225 Queen.
  • 1873 Hunter, Rose & Co.'s Toronto City Directory lists "Ontario Steam Engine & Machine Works / James Martin & Son" and "Martin James & Son (James sen. and James jun.) props. Ontario engine works. office and works, 223-225 Queen e." Elsewhere in the directory it has writeups of some more prominent businesses: "Ontario Engine and machine Works. 3 Ontario Lane and 225 Queen street east, James Martin & Sons, proprietors. Steam engine eight horse, average ten hands employed. Manufacture steam engines, hydraulic pumps and presses, mill machinery, caddie and box presses, retainers, compresses, &c. Engines made by this firm may be seen at Messrs. Rowsell & Hutchison's, J. D. Lewis', J. Carty's, McLeish & Co's. McGregor (rope maker), Synge *builder), Christian Guardian office, Boeckh's factory, Greig & Carlyle's, &c. The traction engine employed in driving the stone-crusher in the city, was manufactured by this firm."
