In 1866 Thomas Loring was operating a foundry in Blackwoodtown, NJ, which is now called Blackwood and is across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Judging by patents he was granted, he was also making harrow-blade sharpeners and other simple sharpening machinery. By 1876 he was operating as Loring & Son; that year's catalog from J. E. Mitchell features a patent Loring & Son grinder on page 30.
