Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
171,982 Jan. 11, 1876 Pipe-Wrench Joseph Browning Philadelphia, PA The patent is for the toothed wheel on a movable carriage forming the movable jaw in conjunction with the rack teeth on the main bar. The patent described a self-adjusting form with a compression spring connecting the jaw carriage to the main bar, and a screw-adjust form with a long adjusting screw extending to the end of the handle.
An 1877 W.C. DUYCKINCK (New York) supply catalog shows the wrench in 4 sizes, identified as "MARSHALL PATENT PIPE TONGS."
Browning received November 30, 1897 patent (no. 594,775) for "V" shaped gripping groves in the face of the gripping roller.
A Dec. 29, 1898 "IRON AGE" listing advertises this wrench as being brought to market by the Bonney Vise and Tool Works; it is the "pull the jaw back against a compression spring to adjust" type.
510,263 Dec. 05, 1893 Wrench Edward P. Jones Philadelphia, PA A set-screw type adjustment works against a spring to set the position of the sliding jaw. An article in the Dec. 23, 1893 Scientific American notes "When jaws are shaped to receive a polygonal nut the handle is placed at an angle of 15 degrees to the jaw, and where the jaws are formed to receive a square nut, the handle is placed at an angle of almost twenty-two and a half degrees to the jaws."
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" identifies the Bonney Vise & Tool Works as a second manufacturer in 1898.

594,775 Nov. 30, 1897 Pipe Wrench Joseph Browning Philadelphia, PA Largely a recapitulation of Browning's January 11, 1876 patent no. 171,982. The patented feature is the "V" shaped gripping groves in the face of the gripping roller.
According to Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930," Bonney Vise & Tool Works of Philadelphia was producing the Browning Roller Jaw Pipe Wrench in 1898.
721,660 Mar. 03, 1903 Pipe Wrench and Cutter Charles S. Bonney Portsmouth, OH The distinctive feature of this patent is the movable jaw component that has pipe cutter and pipe jaw faces. This "toggle" attaches to the movable jaw frame with a pin.
Announced to the trade in 1902; within a couple of years it was supplanted as noted below.
Refined in Joseph G. Baker's August 9, 1904 patent (no. 767,199) which describes the "Bonney Masterpiece."
767,199 Aug. 09, 1904 Wrench Joseph G. Baker Philadelphia, PA The patent's distinctive feature is the removable, reversible combination pipe jaw and cutter. The wrench body is frequently found without this removable jaw piece.
Evolved from Charles S. Bonney's March 3, 1903 patent (no. 721,660). Both patents are cited on the BONNEY MASTERPIECE combination nut and pipe wrench and cutter.
1,141,602 Jun. 01, 1915 Lost Motion Take-Up For Tools Joseph G. Baker Allentown, PA A spring in the adjusting mechanism keeps the adjusting screw tight to the adjusted member, so that motion of the screw positively changes the position of the adjusted portion. The drawing shows the concept as applied to a vise and adjustable end wrench.
The patent appears on an adjustable end wrench, marked "BONNEY // ALLENTOWN".
D54,516 Feb. 24, 1920 Pair of Pliers Joseph Edward Durham Jr. Allentown, PA Produced as the Bonney Grease Cup Pliers (Pat. Appl'd For) and the Bonney Battery Terminal and Grease Cup Pliers (Pat. Feb. 24, 1920). The interior jaw surfaces vary. One style of jaws grasps the knurled rim of the top cap on grease cups; the other style will also grasp battery cable end clamps, and battery terminal posts.
