321,763 Jul. 07, 1885 Wood-turning lathe De Witt C. Smith St. Paul, MN The February 1886 Manufacturer and Builder had an illustrated article (p. 30) on this lathe. The lathe allows a turner to simultaneously cut about 40 work-pieces at a time. Each piece is cut to length and of regular polygonal (e.g., square, octagon) cross-section and is then clamped to the periphery of a large rotating drum. The lathe is then started and the turner can cut the profile on the outward face of each work-piece. The pieces are then rotated 90 degrees and the process is repeated. When all sides have been cut the pieces are removed from the lathe.
