1978 Leonard and Lorraine Lee established Lee Valley to sell a barrel-stove kit. They soon began selling woodworking tools. In about 1990 they began manufacturing tools under the Veritas name, including hand planes, saws, and marking gauges. Lee Valley catalogs, probably inspired by the catalogs of US woodworking tool seller Garrett Wade, have high production values, are packed with information and products useful to woodworkers, and merit hours of study.
Hand tools are outside the scope of this Vintage Machinery website, but we do include vises. One relatively early Veritas product was the "Tucker" pattern-maker's vise that was an evolution of the well-known Emmert "turtleback" vise. This expensive and well-made vise for manufactured for a couple of decades. Other Veritas vise products include end vises, front vises, tail vises, and a carver's vise.
