In 1872, Joseph Edward Hoppen (advertising as J. E. Hoppen) of 146 Centre Street in New York City was manufacturing foot lathes as well as doing machinist and locksmithing work. By 1884 he had moved to Newark, N. J. That year, and again in 1896, Hoppen was granted a patent on a shaft hanger. By 1909 the business had relocated to Belleville, N. J., was operating as J. E. Hoppen & Sons, and was manufacturing grindstone arbors and frames. J. E. Hoppen died in 1910 but the business continued until at least 1922.

  • 1870: Ancestry.com lists an 1870 census record showing Joseph E. Hoppen, born about 1844, living in Essex, New Jersey.
  • 1872 Boyd's New York State Directory. "J. E. Hoppen, Manufacturer of Foot Lathes and practical machinist, Bell-hanging and locksmithing, 146 Centre Street, New York."
  • 1879 patent for a grinding-wheel frame.
  • 1880 Documents of the Assembly of the State of New York, One Hundred and Third Session, in a list of expenses: "J. E. Hoppen, locks and keys $9.45".
  • 1884 patent for shaft hangers granted to Joseph E. Hoppen of Newark.
  • January-June 1899 Real Estate Record and Builders' Guide lists a conveyance granted by W. F. Hattersley to J. E. Hoppen, 8th Av, in the amount of $1086. The same man was mortgagor to Hoppen in the amount of $1500. The building in question was in Newark, N. J. at "226 8th av, one 3-sty frame dwell'g, 23x26, with extension".
  • 1891 Annual Report of the Committee on Fire Patrol, to the New York Board of Fire Underwriters, lists a fire on 1890-09-22 at 6:30 PM, at 508 Pearl st. the 4-story brick building included "J. E. Hoppen, Machinery" among its tenants.

    An order has been entered in the Supreme Court by Justice McLaughlin, discharging a mortgage held by Andrews Soher against the property 508 Pearl Street, owned by Joseph E. Hoppen, in an action brought by Hoppen against Soher, behind which is a story of a millionaire's liberality and carelessness.
  • January 1902 Evening Post Record of Real Estate Sales in Greater New York lists a quit-claim conveyance for 508 Pearl St., "19.10x 88.6x n. w. s. x 29.10x 22.9x n. s. x 94 s. e. s". The quit-claim was grnated by Mary McF. Jones to Joseph E. Hoppen on July 2 of 1901.
  • January-June 1903 Real Estate Record and Builders' Guide lists a mortgage granted by John A. Weekes and Bernard Golden to Joseph E. Hoppen, in the amount of $2800, for "Pearl st. No. 508, n s. 40.1 e Centre st, runs n 80.1 x n e 21.7 x s e 30.10 x s w 94.3 to st. x w 18.9 to beginning. P M. Mar 2, 1903. 5 years, 4½%. 1:166." Also listed is a conveyance for the above-mentioned 508 Pearl street, from Hoppen to Weekes and Golden, on the same date.
