C. H. Buswell was seen on a foot-operated miter machine. Charles H. Buswell was a Worcester picture framer and frame manufacturer who was active from 1865 until at least 1890.

Information Sources

  • An email correspondent reported a foot-pedel "expert miter plane", "MFG C H Buswell Worcester Ma."
  • This maker is listed in Kenneth Cope's American Foot Power and Hand Power Machinery, as the manufacturer of the "Expert Miter Plane". It's an early foot-powered "chopper" or miter machine, that cuts 45-degree angles. Thanks to Jeff McVey for providing this info.
  • A search for patents issued between 1840 and 1880 did not turn up anything related to a C. H. Buswell.
  • We have a report of an 1864 2-cent piece whose reverse has been planed down and stamped "C. H. Buswell 1866". The obverse is stamped twice with "1865".
  • 1868-07-11 Springfield Daily Republican, page 8, "Married" column. "In this city, 4th, by Rev Mr. Buckingham, C. H. Buswell of Worcester, and Clara H. Smith."

  • 1890 advertisement seen on eBay, source unknown: "Buswell, 91 Exchange St. / C. H. Buswell / Manufacturer of / Picture Frames / Of Every Description. / Gold and Silver Gilt, Bronze, Walnut, Oak, and Cherry. Stained Engravings Bleached and Restored. Old Frames Re-glued. / No. 81 Exchange St., First Floor, Worcester, Mass."
