Operator of the Phenix Iron Works in 1859

This company was best known as a maker of steam engines and boilers, but they also manufactured sawmills and portable steam engines (ca 1880's).

The company was established in 1858 by Thomas E. Chandler and Franklin Taylor, and were manufacturing sawmill equipment until 1898, and probably later than that.

• A correspondent reports that the Colorado History Museum in Denver has a Chandler & Taylor steam engine with an "Est. in 1858" tag.
• Ad in 1891 "Grain Dealers and Shippers Gazetteer."
• Listed in C. H. Wendel's The Circular Saw Mill. Wendel reproduces an illustration from an 1892 issue of "The Stationary Engineer" that shows the drive system for a large circular sawmill. Wendel says, "The Heacock patent feed system was standard equipment on these mills."
• 1898 letterhead seen on eBay: "Makers of automatic cut-off and throttling steam engines," and then, in smaller type, "steam boilers, saw mills and saw mill machinery."
• Based on patent records, the eponymous Chandler and Taylor are believed to be Thomas E. Chandler and Franklin Taylor.
