Oscar R. Gustafson and George S. Scott were the founder of Gustafson & Scott Manufacturing Co., a company specializing in safety equipment and also dealing in new and used woodworking machinery. They qualify for an entry in this Manufacturers Index because they manufactured safety cutter-heads, and some of the safety guards that they sold. Gustafson & Scott did not make the woodworking machines bearing their label. To date, all such machines we have seen have the G&S name on a separate plaque rather than cast into the frame.

So far we have only one solid data point on the years of operation of this business: 1927.

Information Sources

  • Doug Westlind forwarded a scan of a 1927 catalog of safety equipment from this company. The safety equipment is from a variety of makers, including Surty Guard Co., Jones Guards, Practical Guard Co., and French. There are a few guards whose makers are ambiguous.
  • The above catalog gives their address as 1637-59 Lowell Ave., corner Wabansia, Chicago.
  • A web search produces a very few hits, including an auction listing for a Gustafson & Scott jointer, model "The Porter", which is a name belonging to C. O. & A. D. Porter Co.. Listings for a grinder, a sander, and a 10" tablesaw do not provide any clues to who the real manufacturers could be.
  • A 26" bandsaw is reported with Lamson Cutter Head Co. name cast in the base, and an applied tag from Gustafson & Scott.
  • We have found no patents assigned to this company. Their safety cutter-head was covered by patent 1,478,649, which was granted to Oscar R. Gustafson and jointly assigned to Gustafson and George S. Scott.
  • The U. S. Forest Products Laboratory published a booklet dated March 1936, Operating small sawmills, methods, bibliography, and sources of equipment by C. J. Telford. A table lists the makers of various types of equipment, including circular sawmills, band sawmills, edgers, and planers. Gustafson & Scott was listed as a maker of "saws". That probably means sawblades.
