The objects of my invention are, first, to increase the power and speed of the engine with- oat increasing its weight or cost, and to render the machine capable of traveling easily over hilly or uneven surfaces, and also over soft ground; second, to render the steering action simple and prompt in operation; third, to perfectly balance the boiler upon the supporting-frame, so as to avoid all strain upon the frame and engine while the machine is traveling over uneven surfaces; fourth, to so mount the engine upon the frame-work that it may be readily connected to and removed from said frame; fifth, to apply the motive power directly to the traction-w heels, and to allow for variations in speed of the wheels while the machine is turning around; sixth, to permit of ready variations in tile speed of the ma- chine, and to entirely disconnect tile propelling-gear, so that the engine may operate as a stationary engine, and, last, to simplify and strengthen the machine as a whole. Claim: In a traction-engine, the combination of the main frame having the semicircular- rear portion, the boiler secured thereto, and the curved or- U-shaped axle passed around the rear side of the boiler and flexibly connected at its spindles to the frame, with the hangers engaging beneath the bottom of the boiler with their lower hooked ends, and slidingly connected to the axle at their upper ends, and~ the springs cushioning the vertical play of these hangers.

It consists in improved means for connecting the header portion with the threshing- machine frame and in~ means for transmitting power from the driving parts of the threshing-machine portion to drive the sickle-carrying belt or draper-reel and various parts of the header mechanism. Claim: In a traveling harvester and in combination with the threshing-machine and header frames thereof, means connecting the rear inner corner of the header-frame with the other frame and including a normally-open socket on one frame and a hook on the other frame forming with said socket a substantially-universal joint whereby the outer end of the header-frame is permitted to rise and fall and the front of the header-frame is permitted to be raised and depressed for cutting different heights of grain.

Claim: In a grain threshing and cleaning apparatus, the combination with the threshing-cylinder, inclined grain-carrier, and separate straw- carrier approximately in line therewith, of a stationary horizontally-disposed screen located below and receiving grain from the carrier upon its front end, an endless traveling belt having transverse slats moving over the upper surface of the screen and in close contact therewith, and one or more fans located beneath and discharging an air-blast upwardly and rearwardly through the screen.
709,592	Sep. 23, 1902	Traction Engine	Daniel Best	San Leandro, Alameda County, CA	Abstract: It is the object of my invention to provide an elastic support for the boiler, engine, and supporting-frame of a traction-engine, and such connection between the frame and the bearing-wheels and axle thereof that the movement of the supported parts upon the springs will not interfere with the proper meshing of the gears by which power is transmitted from the engine to the gears upon the main bearing-wheel whereby the latter are revolved. Claim: The combination in a traction-engine of the frame; the bearing-wheels; the axle; transverse plates forming a channel within which the axle is movable; yokes suspended directly from the axle, and plates through which the ends of the yoke pass; and springs disposed between the last-named plates; said first-named plates bearing directly upon the uppermost of the last-named plates.
