The advantage of this technique is that the resulting fuel is much easier to handle than normal brush-wood. According to the 1873 "Subject-matter index of patents for inventions issued by the United States Patent Office", this patent was granted an extension.

The leather strap is looped around the work to provide additional pressure, an innovation that was superseded by the use of chains in later designs. The inventor was the brother of Thomas E. Daniels, who invented the historically important Daniels planer, patent 8,548.
