An abandoned hoist was seen in an isolated part of the Inyo Mountains in Eastern California: "Joshua Hendy Machine Works / S.F. Cal. / The Davis Hoister / Pat'd Dec. 11, 1888". It was advertised as the "Davis Horse-Power Hoisting Whim", a 'whim' being a device to hoist buckets of ore out of a deep mine. This Davis hoisting whim provided single-lever operation and all-iron construction so that it was very simple to operate and unaffected by the weather. An example of this hoist is on outdoor display at the Angels Camp in Calaveras County, California. |
