In 1852, Gerhard B. Allen operated the Fulton Iron Works Co. on the banks of the Mississippi River. They manufactured marine and stationary engines, boilers, sheet iron work, saw and grist mill and sugar cane machinery, and tobacco, oil, and hydraulic presses.
