In 1846 Christopher Elliott & Co. was operating the Phœnix Foundry at 58 Yonge Street in Toronto, and was making saw mill castings, steam engines, and many other products. By 1850 George B. Spencer was operating the Phœnix Iron and Stove Works at 58 Yonge Street. Spencer's product line included steam engines and mill castings. By 1856 John McGee had taken over those premises, which he operated as the Phœnix Foundry, makers of saw mills and other machinery. It appears that in about 1863 he got out the the sawmill business in order to focus on stoves and hollow-ware (kettles, sad-irons, etc.)
