Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
52,056 Jan. 16, 1866 Improvement in Augers Ebenezer G. Lamson Windsor, VT Patent regarding the configuration of cutting lips of "gouge-lip" auger bits, such as Ransom Cook's patent (8162). Apparently, there was some perception of a tear-out problem with Cook's patent bits which Lamson proposes to redress by depressing the cutting lip near the lead scrw, thus allowing the cutting to commence nearer the periphery. James Swan addressed the same issue with another solution a few years later (115541).

771,243 Oct. 04, 1904 Lathe James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT
773,640 Nov. 01, 1904 Turning-Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT This application has relation to tool-holders of the character of that illustrated and described in Letters Patent No. 672,399, granted to me 16 April, 1901.

Claim:
In turning bar-stock it is frequently desirable to reduce the work to two different diameters at different points along its length, and in that event it becomes necessary to either employ two tools upon the turret or else to stop the operation of the lathe long enough to secure a careful adjustment of the tool after one diameter of the work has been turned. According to the present invention, however, the toolholder is so formed that after one portion of the work has been turned to the desired diameter both the tool and the backrest may be quickly adjusted to predetermined points without the necessity of adjusting set-screws, but by simply bringing into play other abutments which have been previously adjusted for the desired positions of the tool and backrest.

Claim:
The object of the present invention is to provide certain improvements in turning-tools of the character referred to, in consequence of which the work may lie more accurately and firmly supported by the work rests than heretofore, by which the cutter may be easily adjusted with relation to the work and securely held against loose movement and the pressure of the work rests upon the work be distribute over greater areas.

Schaum, patent 1,042,149. It appears that by 1917 the rights to this lathe belonged to Jones & Lamson Machine Co.; a team led by Ralph Flanders made more improvements to the design (patent 1,219,813).

985,411 Feb. 28, 1911 Work Supporting Rest for Turning Tools James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Original application filed 24 Nov., 1905. Divided and this application filed 17 Oct., 1906.
1,020,495 Mar. 19, 1912 Metal Turning Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Claim:
This invention has relation to metal turning tools substantially of the character of those illustrated in. my application filed 17 November, 1908, and has for its object to provide certain improvements therein, so that a greater number of adjustments of the work rests and of the cutter may be secured, whereby the tool may be used for turning a variety of diameters on a single piece of work with accuracy.
1,020,494 Mar. 19, 1912 Turning Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Claim:
This invention has relation to metal-turning tools, and has for its object to provide improvements therein, by which the work may be supported more effectively against thrust of the cutter; the cutter may be fed relatively to the work by means coacting with the work, and the tool itself may be strengthened, rendered more accu 'ate in operation, and its efficiency otherwise increased.
1,020,493 Mar. 19, 1912 Turning Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Claim:
This invention has relation to tools for cutting metal, as in turning, planing, and similar operations. It consists of a cutter having a comparatively acute edge, mounted to swivel or move freely within certain defined limits so as to allow the pressure of the chip on the top slope of the tool to swing the tool around so as to bring its so-called clearance face flatly against the wall of the metal from which the chip is being taken, thus giving the cutting edge a pressure on both sides instead of the usual one-sided pressure.
1,036,106 Aug. 20, 1912 Stop Mechanism for Metal Working Machines James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT
1,036,104 Aug. 20, 1912 Taper Turning Mechanism James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT
1,036,103 Aug. 20, 1912 Chip Controller for Metal Turning Tools James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT
1,036,101 Aug. 20, 1912 Metal Turning Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Claim:
In order that the invention may be understood, it is necessary to explain the action other cutters which have been used in accordance with the general practice. this kind of work, the cutter is usually carried by a holder which makes possible its adjustment laterally and longitudinally in relation to the work, so that it may be caused to stands at a slight angle to the wall of metal from which the chip is being taken, so that only the extreme edge of this clearance face (which edge forms the cutting edge) is in contact with the metal. This universal practice of giving a lathe tool a clearance subjects the cutting edge to a one sided pressure. This, in turn, necessitates the employment of very blunt edged tools capable of withstanding such one sided pressure. it is obvious that at cutting edge should never be subjected to lateral stress. it cutting edge will stand an enormous strain it the pressure equalized against both faces thereof.
1,042,149 Oct. 22, 1912 Lathe Otto W. Schaum Philadelphia, PA This patent provides improvements to the Fay Automatic Lathe of patent 910,466.
1,054,840 Mar. 04, 1913 Metal Turning Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Claim:
This invention has relation to metal turning or cutting tools, and has for its object to provide a novel form thereof, in which the cutter may be quickly moved into and out of a predetermined working position.
Still another object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting the cutter upon the cutter-carrying block in such manner that it is properly held with relation to the work, and, moreover, may be adjusted longitudinally as occasion demands.
1,056,332 Mar. 18, 1913 Turret-lathe George A. Perry Springield, VT
    Turret-lathe James Hartness Springfield, VT
1,056,097 Mar. 18, 1913 Turning Tool James Hartness Springfield, Windsor County, VT Claim:
This invention has relation to turning tools which may be placed upon the tool slide of an engine or turret lathe for reducing the diameter of the work.
One of the objects of the invention is to so construct a tool that the cutter will be held ir. its cutting relation to the work with the greatest rigidity and without danger of the cutter springing backward from the work.

4,773,769 Sep. 27, 1988 Slide Structure and Method of Assembly Thereof Jerald W. Church Charlestown, Sullivan County, NH Abstract:

A slide structure having an elongated slide body having a pair of outwardly convergent continuous slide surfaces at each side thereof which are supported within longitudinally spaced pairs of vee blocks which vee blocks are carried by a base member. The vee blocks at each side of the slide body are pivotable with the vee blocks at one side being selectively biased to provide a selectable preload between the vee blocks and the slide body.
