USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
1,338,721 May. 04, 1920 Internal-Combustion Engine Albert Y. Edwards Springfield, ‎Clark County, OH Abstract:
This invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines, and it more particularly relates to engines of the stationary horizontal type. An object of my invention is to construct an engine of the character referred to in which all working parts will be enclosed but at the same time readily accessible by the removal of an unencumbered cover from the crank casing. A further object of my invention is to reduce the cost of machining to the minimum by providing a construction in which it is necessary to go through the operation of but a single planing and setting of the engine casting to provide a finished surface for the reception of the crank case cover, the caps for the crank shaft bearings, and the brackets which support such parts as the magneto, the governor and the cam gears. A further object of the invention is to enable the employment of an unencumbered crank case cover by providing improved valve operating mechanism whereby the introduction into the crank case or the cover of such parts as transverse shafts or other mechanism which would be liable to interfere with the aforesaid object, is obviated. A further object of the invention is to provide an engine of the character referred to which will be compactly arranged, simple in construction, economical in manufacture and effective in operation.
Claim:
In an internal combustion engine, an open top crank casing having a gear and bearing housing on one side thereof and a bearing housing on the opposite side thereof, said housing and casings having aimed upper surfaces, a cover fitted to said surfaces, bearings for a crank shaft formed in the casing and cover and projecting into said housings with their transverse centers in the plane of the finished surface of said casing, and a gear bracket secured to the surface of said casing adjacent said gear housing.
1,458,223 Jun. 12, 1923 Valve Mechanism for Internal Combustion Engines Albert Y. Edwards Springfield, ‎Clark County, OH Abstract:
Mly invention. relates to improvements ini valve mechanism for internal combustion engines, it more particularly relating to engines of the stationary horizontal type; this application being a division of my application Ser. No. 215,792 filed February 7, 1918. An object of my invention is to provide a valve mechanism for engines of the type referred to so arranged as to obviate the necessity of introducing any part thereof into the crank case or the cover for the crank case so as to leave the cover for the case unencumbered to permit" ready accessibility to the working parts in the crank case. A further object of my invention' is to provide a valve mechanism which will be simple in construction and effective in its operation.
Claim:
In a gas engine, the combination of a pair of cylinders, a flywheel located on a line extending between the cylinders, a crank shaft and casing located at one end of said cylinders, valves at the opposite end of said cylinders, valve connections, a cam shaft casing detachably secured to the crank casing at one side thereof, and a cam for operating the valve connections within said cam shaft casing.
