"1. A variable speed mechanism comprising two reversely placed multi-grooved cone wheels journaled on parallel axes, a member mounted to have reciprocating motion perpendicular to the said exes, a bracket arm slidably carried by said part and having a suitable operating handle, an idle wheel rotatably carried by said bracket arm, and adapted to engage the grooves of said cone wheels, and spring means acting on said slidable member to press the idle wheel towards the cone wheels."
1,477,052 Dec. 11, 1923 Friction gearing James D. Gibbs Louisville, KY This friction gearing is a variation on that seen in patent 1,429,866, which was subsequently withdrawn. Both patents were based on the same application. This patent's date has been seen on a sensitive drill press built by Gibbs General Machine Co. and distributed by Jos. T. Ryerson & Co. The patent number is listed in a promotional brochure for the US version of the Schaffner lathe that was made in Switzerland. The brochure also mentions the "Gibbs V-Disc Transmission".
