Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
36,621 Oct. 07, 1862 Improved centrifugal governor Thomas R. Pickering New York, NY Earlier governors used balls being rotated by the engine; gravity pulled the balls down and great rotational speed lifted the balls up. Pickering was dissatisfied with the accuracy of this mechanism and his innovation was to replace the action of gravity with that of leaf springs that pull the balls inward. The Pickering governor was a rousing success.
