Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
136,349 Feb. 25, 1873 Improvement in chucks John H. Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Wales, Brown & Allen - patent attorneys
This invention consists in a combination of certain devices whereby a chuck, which is both universal and independent as regards the action of its dogs, is obtained, without displacement or detachment of its parts, for the purpose of admitting of the convenient adjustment of the chuck to concentric or eccentric work

148,788 Mar. 17, 1874 Improvement in Chucks for Metal Lathes John Henry Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Brown & Allen - patent attorneys
A "Little Giant" drill chuck has been seen with the patents dates corresponding to 148,788, 315,684, and 315,685. That example had the Westcott Chuck Co. name, which changed its name from Oneida Steam Engine & Foundry Co. in about 1886.
The object of my invention is to prodiice a chuck more easily, simply, quickly, and effectively adjustable than the chucks heretofore in use, for the griping and holding of varioussized drills, metallic rods, bars, wires, &c., for the purpose of operating the same in lathes or other machines. My invention consists in the combination, with a chuck-body or face-plate, of two movable and adjustable jaws, provided with triangular tongues, so arranged with reference to each other that when the jaws, sliding in a diametrical groove or recess in the faceplate, approach each other the tongues of each jaw penetrate between the tongues of the other jaw, and which jaws are operated and made to close in upon or release at will the object to be held by a right and left handed screw, working in corresponding right and left handed screw-threads in the jaws themselves.
159,989 Feb. 16, 1875 Improvement in chucks John H. Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Brown & Allen - patent attorneys
The Westcott Chuck Co. name, which changed its name from Oneida Steam Engine & Foundry Co. in about 1886.
My invention relates to certain improvements in scroll-chucks, such as are well known and in ordinary use; and it consists in a novel construction of the scroll and box, whereby the threads are kept cleared and prevented from clogging. In scroll-chucks as heretofore constructed, threads on the face-plate and the box carrying the dogs have been formed with their ends tapering, the ends of the thread of the scroll having been so formed by the meeting of the volute of the thread with the inner and outer concentric circles of the scroll-plate. This formation has produced more or less of a wedge-like action upon any dirt which might accumulate between the threads, which have thereby been liable to become clogged and cause inconvenience in handling the chuck.

308,541 Nov. 25, 1884 Chuck John H. Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Duell, Laass & Duell - patent attorneys
The Oneida Steam Engine & Foundry Co. changed its name to Westcott Chuck Co. in about 1886.
This invention relates more particularly to the class of jaws which slide radially in grooves or -ways in the chuck, the sides of said jaws being provided with corresponding shoulders or grooves for engaging with those of the chuck, so as to firmly and accurately guide the jaws. The bearing-surfaces of the aforesaid shoulders and grooves require to be fitted perfectly true and closely, so as to effectually prevent lost motion, and thus insure accurate adjustment of the work on the chuck. Inasmuch as the jaw requires to be case-hardened, it has been found difficult to obtain the desired accuracy in the fitting of the jaws to the chuck, the grooves and shoulders formed in the jaw frequently becoming distorted in the process of case-hardening, and cannot, therefore, be planed or dressed by a tool. To obviate this defect I divide the jaw longitudinally, and provide the upper or outer section with longitudinal flanges, and with a plain rectangular longitudinal groove between said flanges, and provide the other section with a rectangular longitudinal tongue, and with longitudinal shoulders along opposite sides of the tongue, which shoulders, together with, the aforesaid flanges, form the channels to receive the guide-ribs in the channels of the face-plate.

315,684 Apr. 14, 1885 Drill-Chuck John Henry Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Brown & Hall - patent attorneys
A "Little Giant" drill chuck has been seen with the patents dates corresponding to 148,788, 315,684, and 315,685. The Oneida Steam Engine & Foundry Co. changed its name to Westcott Chuck Co. in about 1886.
The invention is more especially designed for universal drill-chucks, but may be applied to other universal chucks. It consists, essentially, in the combination, with a chuck having two universally moving jaws, of set screws inserted and arranged between said jaws, and made capable of adding to the strength of the grip of said chuck by compressing a drill or other tool or article independently of and between the gripping surfaces of the jaws of said chuck.
315,685 Apr. 14, 1885 Lathe-chuck John Henry Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Brown & Hall - patent attorneys
A "Little Giant" drill chuck has been seen with the patents dates corresponding to 148,788, 315,684, and 315,685.
The Oneida Steam Engine & Foundry Co. changed its name to Westcott Chuck Co. in about 1886.
My invention relates more particularly to chucks having two jaws with V-shaped faces, which are fitted in a slot or channel extending diametrically across the chuck-body, and are moved toward and from each other by a worm or screw having right and left hand threads; but the invention may be embodied in any chucks in which the slots, seats, or channels for the jaws extend entirely to the outer end of the body and to the circumference thereof. When the chuck-body is thus cut away, it is considerably weakened, and in order to prevent its springing or splitting I reinforce it by applying thereto a ring which encircles the chuck-body, and preferably fits in a circumferential rabbet formed in the outer end of the body. I also notch the jaws at the junction of their ends and edges, and make them to project through the ring to the outer face thereof and to the end of the chuck-body, and then the ring also serves as a stop to prevent the opening of the jaws to take an article larger than the chuck is intended for and to an extent which would endanger the worm or screw by reducing the engagement of its threads with the jaws.

335,982 Feb. 09, 1886 Lathe-chucks John H. Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Duell, Laass & Hey - patent attorneys
Experience has proven that the majority of lathe chucks which have the jaw guiding grooves extending completely across them are so weakened by said grooves as to render them liable to spread and lose their requisite firm hold on the jaws when the tool or other object held by the jaws is subjected to the operation of cutting or abrading. The object of my present invention is to obviate the aforesaid defect; and to that end my invention consists in the application to the chuck-head of extra stays for sustaining the jaws independently of their adjusting devices, and also in a novel construction and combination with the chuck-head of a tie-plate extending across the jaw-guiding grooves of the chuck-head, and provided at opposite sides of said grooves with shoulders engaging corresponding shoulders on the chuck-head; and it furthermore consists in a novel combination of the aforesaid stays and tie-plate with the chuck-head.

357,437 Feb. 08, 1887 Lathe-chuck John H. Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Duell, Laass & Duell - patent attorneys
This invention relates more particularly to the class of lathe and drill chucks which have dogs or jaws sliding in radial grooves in the body of the chuck, and sustained therein adjustably in relation to their distance from the center of the chuck by means of screws journaled on the chuck and engaging with screw threads on the jaws. The object of my present invention is to increase the capacity of the chuck, so as to enable it to hold work of greater diameter with out materially adding weight to the chuck or interfering with the adjusting-screws or other jaw setting and holding devices of the chuck.

470,369 Mar. 08, 1892 Lathe-chuck James H. Westcott Oneida, Madison County, NY Duell, Laass & Duell - patent attorneys
This invention relates to the class of chucks which have the jaws adjustable independent of each other by separate screws mounted in radially-movable boxes or carriers, which latter are also adjusted by means of screws connected thereto and to the body. Heretofore said carrier-adjusting screws have been confined longitudinally in the body, so as to allow pinions on the inner ends of said screws to engage an annular rack, by means of which a universal adjustment is effected. By confining the said screws as aforesaid the movement of the jaw-carriers is limited, and consequently the adjustment of the jaw is correspondingly limited. The object of this invention is to augment the range of adjustment of the jaw-carriers of the class of chucks to which this invention pertains.

The famous Westcott chuck was a high quality device that was sold from about 1880 until at least 1943. They were made in a variety of sizes. A model 10A held bits up to 1/2 inch and was 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The model 12 1/2 A held bits up to 1 inch in diameter, was itself 4 inches in diameter and weighed a hefty 11 pounds. The prices in a 1943 catalog range between $12 and $20.
"This invention relates to the class of chucks which are provided with a diametric groove in the face of the chuck-body in which groove are seated the jaws, which, by means of a right and left screw engaging correspondingly screw-threaded grooves in corresponding sides of the jaws, are moved synchronously either toward or from each other to grip or release the shank of the drill or other tool inserted between said jaws. In practice it has been found that the tightening of the grip of the jaws upon the drill or tool by the single screw engaging the jaws at one side of the axis of the chuck, subjects the entire chuck to a severe torsional strain which tends to crowd the jaws out of line with each other and break the chuck-body and bend or injure the screw. The object of ;this invention is to effectually obviate such injurious results; and to that end the invention consists essentially in the combination with a drill-chuck or analogous tool having gripping jaws disposed adjustably opposite each other and a screw engaging the jaws at one side thereof for moving them toward and from each other, of a brace on the opposite side of the jaws adjustably tying them together and thereby equalizing the strains at opposite sides of the axis of the chuck and maintaining the jaws in line with each other during the operation of the chuck."

Absract
My invention covers an improved jaw and cradle and is shown in a familiar form of lathe or drill chuck. Its purpose is to facilitate the operation of such chuck by providing a means for positioning the several dogs on their mounts at an exactly equal distance from the center of the chuck so that by the use of the scroll ring they may be simultaneously moved toward or from the center, always being maintained severally at an equal distance from the center.
