Image Description:
John Sutcliffe & Son, Ltd., of the Arden Works, Halifax, report to us that they have had a fairly successful year, and have increased their turnover in spite of universal bad trade. As the firm’s machines are getting better known abroad, their export trade is steadily increasing, and among other important contracts, they have had the refitting of a large packing case factory in Rotterdam, recently destroyed by fire. In the home trade, Messrs. Sutcliffe have supplied machines to the British Government and plants to several Corporations for tramway departments; but about the most important contract has been the fitting up of the new moulding mill for Ashworth, Kirk & Co., of Nottingham, and we herewith give an illustration of the machine with which they were supplied. It appears that Ashworth, Kirk & Co. approached John Sutcliffe & Son, Ltd.. and arranged to have a machine specially made for them, incorporating numerous improvements especially necessary in their business. In this machine, we have the engineer’s skill aided by the machine user’s experience, the result being a machine that is as perfect as possible, a sample of the highest class of machine construction, and capable of doing the work that it is intended for in the best possible way, and being easy to manipulate. As a sample of what the machine will do, we may say that it will turn out 20,000-ft. of 2-in. by 1-in. moulds, as an average day's work. Every detail has been carefully studied with one object in view—-to make a machine which will turn out mouldings of a more perfect finish and at a higher rate of feed than any other make of machine. Besides working at a. high rate of feed. numerous improvements have been introduced which facilitate the quick manipulation of the machine and the easy and speedy setting of the cutters, so that an exceptionally large daily output is obtained. The body of the machine is in one entire casting, the frame, table, and even the cross-slide which carries the side heads being all cast in one piece. The casting is of good proportions, and not only of great weight, but the metal is put in the right place, and just where it is wanted to give strength. The fluted feed rollers are of large diameter, and having machine-cut teeth, give a good grip on the timber without excessive pressure. The top feed rollers can be quickly removed and bevel rollers substituted for feeding bevel moulds. The feed rollers are driven by strong spur gearing, which can be driven at six different rates of feed. the range being from 18-ft. to 70-ft. per minute. All the gear wheels have machine-cut teeth which ensures very smooth and noiseless running, and the gear wheels and feed rollers are all fitted with covers. The cutter-block spindles are of exceptional strength, made from the best steel, and the spindle ends where they run in the bearings are hardened and ground. The bearings are made of phosphor bronze of a very special mixing for high-speed running, and although the spindles revolve at the exceptional speed of 5,500 revs. per min. the bearings remain quite cool. The bearings of the cutter-block spindles are all fitted with automatic oil lubricators. The side headstocks are exceptionally strong and rigid, and can be quickly locked in place. The inside spindle is set well in advance so that the outside or finishing spindle has the fence to work against; this, combined with the improved side pressure, entirely does away with “spelching,” so common with all other side spindles, and work can be done with the side cutters equal to that done by the top cutters. The holding down and side pressures are all of an improved type, are quickly adjusted, and hold the timber firmly and well up to the cutters. The frame is arranged so that the side cutters and bottom cutters can easily be got at for adjustment, the bottom cutters can be set from underneath the machine, which is a great saving in time. All the working parts are of the highest class finish, the shafts and spindles after being turned are finished in the latest grinding machinery, and are guaranteed true to within ,1/1000 part of an inch. A counter-shaft complete with all necessary pulleys and belt striking gear is included with the machine.

Five of these machines have been supplied to the above-mentioned firm at Nottingham during the last 12 months. Further particulars, samples of work, etc., can be obtained from the makers of the machine at their Arden Works, Halifax.
