Image Description:
THE ALLIANCE STEAM DROP HAMMER

The illustration shows a 12,000-pound double-acting steam drop hammer, designed and built by The Alliance Machine Co., Alliance, 0.

This is probably the largest drop hammer ever built for purely drop forge work in which the stands are secured to the anvil block. The anvil block is a solid steel casting, weighing 150,000 pounds. This block is set in a cast-iron base, not shown, weighing 50,000 pounds; thus making the total weight of the anvil block 200,000 pounds.

The stands are open-hearth steel castings and are box section in shape. Adjustable V guides are provided in the stands to form ways for the hammer ram. They are made of charcoal iron and can be adjusted both at the top and bottom. This is a desirable feature in drop forge work as the wear on the guides is always greatest at the bottom of the guides and it is absolutely essential that there be but little play between the hammer ram and the guides in order that the top and bottom dies may match perfectly and turn out perfect drop forgings.

The hammer ram is a forging of 45-point steel and the cylinder is of cast-iron provided with a removable cast-iron liner. The cylinder guide is of cast-iron and is provided with a pneumatic cushion so that in case the piston, from any cause whatever, should rise too high, it will be brought to rest in a gradual manner and prevent breaking the cylinder head.

The main valve is of the piston type and works in a removable hard cast-iron shell. The piston valve is of relatively small diameter, as the exhaust is not carried through the center of the valve, but basses out into a chamber connected to both ends of the valve, thus affording a perfect balance. The throttle valve is of the rotary type and works in a removable cast-iron bushing. Both steam and exhaust nipples are secured to the cylinder by a stuffing box construction, which allows considerable vibration in the piping without any bad effects. The valve gearing is of forged steel throughout.

This company builds a complete line of drop hammers, ranging in size from 600 up to 12,000 pounds, as well as double and single stand forging hammers in all sizes.
