A LARGE HELVE HAMMER
CHAS F. Elmes Engineering Works, Morgan & Fulton streets, Chicago, Ill.. are manufacturing steam helve hammers as shown in the illustration in a variety of sizes and equipped for manufacturing all kinds of shapes, shafts, axles, etc. The principal sizes used are those with cylinders, 26, 28 or 30 inches in diameter.
THE METHOD OF INSTALLING A HELVE HAMMER
Steam enters the cylinder from below, drives the helve upward until the tail strikes a spring or beam which causes the helve to fall, striking a blow on the anvil. A latch and screw attachment for regulating the force of the blow from light to heavy is provided and can be quickly and easily set by the operator. The company claim that these hammers have a capacity for all work up to 100,000-pound car axles. The method of installation is clearly shown in the illustration. |
