Image Description:
Manufacturers of Friction Pulleys, Friction Clutches, Hoisting Machinery and Elevators, Lafayette Street, between High and Washington Streets.

In the present age of buildings whose altitude emulates that of the tower of Babel, elevators have become as prime a necessity as the stair-case used to be, and in the construction of elevators and hoisting machinery there are two absolute requirements, safety and speed. Providence has long been the seat of operations for a widely celebrated concern, devoted to the manufacture of friction pulleys, friction clutches and hoisting machinery and elevators, that of Volney W. Mason & Co., which founded in 1860, has since built up a reputation for their products which not only extends throughout the United States, but also over a considerable part of Europe and other foreign lands.

The original and chief specialty of this firm is the manufacture of friction pulleys and friction clutches, which are considered by engineers generally to be unequalled by those of any other manufacturers. In connection with their friction clutch they were led into constructing elevators of which their clutch forms an important and integral part in stopping and starting gradually, and entirely dispensing with all sudden shock or jar, which are unavoidable without the use of an appliance of this character. They planned and furnished all the machinery for hoisting cattle, also for ice hoisting and the runs from slaughter floors to cooling rooms at the Brighton abbatoirs, near Boston. They more recently designed and erected the hoisting machinery at the great hay depot of the New York Central and Hudson River R. R. Co., at 53d street and 11th avenue, New York, which comprises the most extensive collection of hoisting machinery ever assembled and operated in one establishment. There are here, sixty-one hoisting machines in operation lifting the hay from the cars to the warehouse on one side and delivering it to the wagons on the other, the building having three floors, and a storage capacity of 6,000 tons, the whole machinery working with a smoothness and economy that leaves nothing to be desired. Wherever the machinery of this firm has been exhibited it has received the most unqualified endorsements of the best-informed engineers, and numerous medals and diplomas have been awarded them both at home and abroad, for the superiority of their friction clutches and friction pulleys. Mr. Mason, the managing member and founder of the firm, personally attends to the designing of new patterns continually required in the business, which has had a steady growth from its inception in 1860.
