Image Description:
A Patent Double-Cutting Tool box.
The concluding illustration shows a double-cutting tool-box designed and patented by C. Redman & Sons Ltd., of Halifax. This device has been tried out in the makers' works, and we are informed has proved satisfactory in every respect.
The tool-holder is mounted so that it has metal-to-metal contact on both cutting strokes, and it is fitted with a tilting motion for setting the tool in the proper cutting position at each end of the stroke. One tool only with double-cutting edges is necessary, and provision is made for instantly adjusting the tool when setting up.
A recent test made under ordinary working conditions gave the following results :
Using a single-point tool in an ordinary tool-box and quick reverse, the total time taken was 1 hour 16 minutes. With the same fitted with double-cutting tool-box in operation, the time registered was 29 minutes. The cut taken on hard cast iron was 3/8 in. deep by 1/16 in. feed at 45 f.p.m.
The time for setting the tool in the "Redman" patent tool-box can be done in the same time as an ordinary single-point tool, and will not require as much re-setting, owing to recourse to grinding, as the single-point tool cutting in one direction only. The single-point tool has at the commencement of each stroke to enter into sand and scale, but with a cutting tool cutting in each direction, each cutting edge pushes off the chips, which leaves clean metal for the other cutting edges to enter, and therefore prepares for the other section of metal without sand to enter.
