Image Description:
The engraving on the opposite page represents the Buckeye Engine with girder frame, and on the following pages are shown illustrations of the other two styles of this engine. For convenience we will call them styles A, B, and C.

Style A. This is the original or standard design, which may be called the girder frame, since a cross section of the frame is substantially that of the I girder modified to obtain greater lateral strength. It is provided with feet or pedestals under the cylinder and main shaft bearing, and in the larger sizes with an intermediate foot as shown in Fig. 1.

This style is best adapted to moderate rotative speeds. The proportion of stroke to bore adhered to is generally about two to one.

Style B. This has been called, for convenience, the "Tangye" style, but, strictly speaking, its design is composite, features original with the Buckeye Company, being introduced to obtain the most correct distribution of metal possible consistent with a pleasing general contour and adaptation to the working details.

The strokes being all shorter than twice the bore, and the bed having bearing on the foundation throughout its entire length, and possessing, moreover, great strength and rigidity, this style is adapted to higher rotative speed than style A. It is consequently recommended for general use in medium and large sizes and for purposes not requiring exceptionally high speed.
