Image Description:
THE O. S. KELLY MANUFACTURING CO. — The traction engines made by this firm differ from all American examples which we have thus far described. They have advantages not possessed by others; for instance, the heavy Corliss frame has been dispensed with; the cylinders are bolted to a steel plate bracket; they are three-shaft engines; the horn-plates of the boilers are carried upward and backward for supporting the bearings of the crank-shaft, the counter-shaft and the main axle. The aim of the makers has been to make a more powerful engine without increasing the weight, because the strength of the bridges has not kept pace with the times in the United States as well as Great Britain. An engine, built as Fig. 233, has very few stud or bolts in the boiler to work loose and cause leakage; the barrel of the boiler and the smoke-box is made in one plate; the fire-box is stayed at 4½ in, pitch with stays 7/8 in. in diameter. All the bearings are lined with phosphor-bronze. The power is transmitted from the crank-shaft to the main axle by means of two pairs of gear wheels: a great reduction in gearing compared with many other engines. The compensating gearing is mounted on the main axle. An end view of the engine is given by Fig. 234 to show the simplicity of the arrangement. The driving-wheels have flat steel spokes; the tires are also of steel; the bosses of cast-iron. The larger traction engines are fitted with suitable gearing; the ratio of fast speed gearing is 22½ to 1. A single eccentric reversing-gear is adopted; the lever is shown. The pipe conducting the steam to the throttle-valve, and thence to the cylinder is seen. The flywheel is 40 in. in diameter and 10 in. wide on face.
