Image Description:
AUTOMATIC MORTISING MACHINE — The machine shown is a new Automatic Mortising Machine just manufactured by Greenlee Bros. & Co., of Chicago, for the United States Government, for use at the Norfolk Navy Yard. The mortising is done by a square hollow chisel, with the bit running inside at a high rate of speed. The spindle is speeded according to the size of the bit used, varying from 3.000 to 5,000 revolutions per minute. The machine has a capacity of mortising as large as 1¼ square inches in one cut to a depth of 5½ inches. The chisel and bit feed forward and back in unison and the stroke can be varied to any length from 1 inch to 5½ inches. The shorter the stroke, the quicker the tool-carriage reverses in proportion. The tool-carriage has a slow in-feed, with a quick return, in proportion of one to three. The table to which the timber is clamped is raised and lowered by the side-lever, and is worked to stops. The top of the table also works to stops, and is operated by the hand wheel. This machine will work satisfactorily in the hardest woods and is very valuable for graining and boxing, as well as mortising.
