Image Description:
One of the standard lathes of the Davis & Egan Co., now The American Tool Works Co., of Cincinnati, O., is seen in Fig. 35. It is made in centres ranging from 7-in. to 11-in. The turret shown on the carriage is an addition to the lathe, made when desired. In place of this a turret can be supplied to fit on the bed, to be interchangeable with the loose poppet. These lathes have the leading-screw within the bed, and the feed-rod only in front. The latter is driven either through the train of change wheels, or over belt pulleys at pleasure, the gears being more positive in action than the belt. An automatic stop to the carriage, seen to the left, is provided. The feeds can be reversed by the handle seen at the right of carriage. Spindles are hollow, and run in bearings of phosphor bronze.

The combination turret on the saddle is a radical departure from the plain turret: the lower flange is provided with an annular T-slot, in which are fitted a number of tool posts, carrying straight or formed tools as the work may require, thus doing away with the use of expensive box tools. The turret also has six holes for holding taps, dies, boring tools, etc., adapting it to an almost unlimited range of work. The holes are bored so that bars can pass entirely through the turret. Each hole in the turret is provided with a separate stop, obviating the necessity of making the tools to suit the stop. The cut-off rest is attached directly to the turret, and is brought into position like any tool in the turret, and is always out of the way when not in use. It carries a front and back tool post, so that a formed tool can be placed in one of them for producing various shapes.
