In Lang's lathe, Fig. 258, the rest is carried on an extension of the bed and are similar in all respects to the feeds used in all the large lathes made by John Lang & Sons. The feed arrangement, which is operated by the handle seen in the front of the headstock, is shown in Fig. 260. Here A is the back-shaft, having three wheels keyed on it. Three wheels gear with these, running loosely on the hollow shaft B in the bed. A double feather or key can be moved into either of these loose gears by the rod D, which is slid in the longitudinal direction by the handle seen in front of the headstock in Fig. 258. These changes in feed, therefore, can be effected without stopping the lathe. The thumb-screws seen on the discs are available for starting or stopping the feed. These lathes are made in three or four sizes. |
