Comments:
This sander was originally bought by a school in Lyttleton Pretoria for their wood shop. When wood classes ceased to be given a former teacher at the school was offered the machine when all the woodwork equipment was sold. The machine then travelled with him to Kwa Zulu Natal and was used in his shop. Due to downsizing, the owner now had to get rid of surplus machines and this was one of them. He advertised it on a local internet buy/sell column and I was fortunate enough to be first in the queue. In the for sale ad there was an incomplete picture of the machine so I made a commitment to purchase pending seeing it. The machine was 80 miles away from where I lived. I took a drive there, was satisfied and purchased it. Along with it came a bonus of brand new belts (4) and discs (2). The machine has suffered a bit of damage due to being operated with the belt cutting into the main frame work. The top cutter cut through as well a common find. The only parts missing were a small crank for the belt tension mechanism and the small dust deflector at the bottom of the shute which appears to be a common missing part on these sanders. This machine was imported whole from the USA and is the Rockwell International era. It was sold by Hardware Centre, there was a very damaged label barely showing this attached. Hardware Centre being one of the machine outlets allowed to import and sell Rockwell machines one the local manufacturing plant had closed down. At the time there was a law in place that imports had to have a certain percentage of local content. Hence on this machine the enclosed stand is not the normal Rockwell but a locally made one. It is sturdy and well constructed. The motor as well is locally made a Femco .66kW. See my History of Rockwell Delta in South Africa on the OWWM wiki.
This machine was eventually sold to a buyer from Gauteng South Africa.
