Just purchased ($150.00) this "fine" Delta Rockwell wood lathe from a women who said her ex-husband purchased it from a neighbor some twenty five years ago. She claimed he only used it once or twice in all the years he owned the lathe? Luckily for me the lathe was in good shape with the exception some rust at the base of one of the cast iron legs. Upon turning it on I quickly turned it off, discovering that the bearings on the motor haven't been properly greased in nearly 25 years. I completely took apart and cleaned the lathe head stock, motor, tail stock, tool rest and also changed the bearings on the drive shalf to make sure everything was in good shape. The motor quickly quieted down once I applied grease to all the bearings. The only parts I needed to change were the belt and the cotter pin on the on/off switch on the motor. The lathe also came with the original paper envelope with all of the original manuels at the point of sale when it was brand new. All of the paper work is dated with the year 1947/48 which I assume means ti was made around that time. All in all, a great lathe and IMHO the tool rest works/adjusts better then any of the other wood lathes I have used in my experiences as a woodworking teacher. I am not sure what some of the tooling is with the lathe (face plates), I think these would be used with the metal working options that are sometimes seen with this model? For now I am opting to leave this lathe as is, because it is only original once and I do not want to disturb the patina and character this machine has acquired during its life.
