Comments:
I purchased this drill press from a local CL ad. It runs and the variable speed mechanism functions as it should. It is a little noisy when running but I'm not sure yet if that is bearings or the drive machanism. Regardless, I'll be refurbishing this machine and keeping it next to all of the other WWII machines in my little home machine shop. It came with a 0 - 1/4" Albrecht chuck.

Through a contact at the factory, I learned that my dp was sold to the Bulova Watch Co. of NY on 2/22/1943. They bought forur of these at the same time. They opted for the $285 upgrade to a 220v 3 phase motor, for a total cost per unit of $1,140 in 1943 dollars! The spindle runout from the factory was 0.0002". The base price of this dp in the 80's was $2,100.

In my research, I was given an 87 page document written by Michael Connor. It is a very detailed document that not only describes the restoration of his Varimatic, but describes company history as well as other drill press models and Hamilton's tapping machine. What a valuable resource! I contacted the Author and obtained permission to post it here. You can find it at:

Mr. Connor's only request is that if any new or additional relevant information is found, that he be notified so that he can include it in future revisions of the document. His contact info is on the first page.
