I found this at a moving sale last week, some people were moving to CA and had this out in front for sale, so I bought it.

Research indicates it was made between 1869 - 1899 when the Niles Tool Works Co was so named.

I took an old knife and spun the wheel on it, to may amazement, it polished the edge so nicely, the old dull knife cuts thru cardboard like a razor. This tells me the grit is very fine on this stone, and with the water bath tub in play, the continuously moving wet stone surface works so effectively & quickly, this beast must have been designed for commercial application.

This is just such an interesting old creation, I though others might enjoy seeing & knowing what king of things pop up at moving sales for pennies on the dollar. I love the quality built into old equipment meant to last, and this has lasted 140 years so far, and will probably last another 140 years to come.

Thanks for letting me join the "Vintage Machinery" site, looking at all the pictures & reading about old equipment is very interesting, but for now, this is how I found it about a mile from my house, out of the garage of some old house in kind of a dumpy neighborhood, you just never know what might pop up at garage, yard, or moving sales.

Perhaps, if I can figure out how, I can post some pictures after the restoration.
