A friend, one of the Colorado OWWMers, saw this ad and sent me the link, knowing that I have a weakness for mid-century home-shop drill presses, but not knowing that I had sworn off further acquisitions. Out of curiosity I looked at the ad. When I saw that the machine was just a couple of miles from my home, I figured I should go have a look. When I got there, I bought it. What else was I to do?
It is small but stout. The brass bushings/bearings are still tight. It was complete except for the depth stop and quill return spring. I ordered a spring from Mr. Dale Fahlbeck, who sold the company many years ago but kept all the parts, for occasions just like this.
The 1/3HP, 1725 RPM motor is one I pulled from the shelf. It is of the correct power and RPM rating according to the manual, and probably close to the correct vintage.
The quill return spring is of a design different that I have seen before. It is a torsion spring that is located inside the pinion, and which is adjusted by rotating the external knob in the same way as the clock spring/constant force springs in the more common design.
I painted the DP with Rusteoleum brown multicolored paint and multiple coats of clear coat. The accent color is Rusteoleum appliance almond, my favorite color.
The motor developed a ground fault AFTER I finished the project. I guess I'll fix it some day.

Comments: Note the quill-return spring adjustment knob. A clever design.
