I bought this machine at an auction in 1987 at a playground equipment manufacturer's closeout auction in Framingham, MA for $200. I have no idea of it's history before that. It seemed that nobody wanted it because of the 3 phase motor. I replaced the 3 hp, 3phase motor with a 1 phase of the same rating and added a new magnetic starter. The motor enclosure is also my handiwork and is a godsend to containing the dust. The dustcover was fabricated just months after revving it up when I first got it. Also did the usual repainting, bearing replacement, and added a biesemeyer fence.
The only difference I have noticed between this and the model 66 is the fact that the 65 has 2 trunions on the infeed end of the mechanism, with the arbor supported on an extended arm. The 66 has one on both the infeed and outfeed ends. There is no discernible loss of stability, even when ripping 3" hardwood, but the seperation of the trunions was an improvement I'm sure.
Fortunately the inspection tag is still on the inside of the door and indicates the born on date. There is also another tag which is aluminum and appears to be applied by a one time owner. This tag reads "Gabriel CBS Inc. 60028". From what I have been able to figure out, This saw had belonged to Gabriel Toys which was owned by CBS from 1978-1986. I have not found any known connection between Gabriel toys or the playground equipment manufacturer. This saw was probably sold off by CBS and ended up making playground equipment by way of a used machine dealer. September 1963 date.
