This machine was purchased from a local woodworker who bought it about 10 years ago and had it shipped to Oregon from Indiana, but as often happens it sat unused. When the owner decided to sell he contacted me to see if I was interested, I tried to resist, really. It is a late snowflake from 1942 and was purchased by the Defense Plant Corporation for the WWII effort. From the DPC tag a google search lead to a page in the National archives stating that Defense Plant PLANCOR 721 was part of Republic Aviation in Evansville, Indiana, makers of the P-47 Thunderbolt. As purchased the saw had a coat of ugly green that had been sprayed on everything including the caked on sawdust and grease. I stripped the machine, installed new tires, all new wiring, guides, and bearings. The only tag that was in good enough shape to reuse was the DPC tag so the others are reproductions. This was my first try at etching new tags, it was a fun project to learn. This is a very late Y-30 snowflake and has a couple features not seen before such as all cast iron guards, even the blade guards on the guidepost and along the gooseneck by the frame. It also has an extra large auxiliary table, larger even than those I've seen on the Y-36's. It also has sheet steel liners inside the snowflake guards on both front and back,. At first I thought these were possibly added after market, but they had original Yates American paint on them so I believe they are original. There really is something special about the Y-30, with the lower blade speed of the 30" wheel and the 720 RPM motor this saw runs and cuts beautifully and is a joy to use. I tried to pull out all the stops on the restoration.
