Bought unit online some years ago. Wanted Oliver vise to go with my other Oliver equipment. Pretty banged up with probably original paint scheme. Rich Fink at Eagle said buyer could have any color it wanted. Gray was not an unusual color. Haven't got around to restoring it. I was please to note it had a quick-release feature. Don't know the year but I am guessing post-1920 based on the 1920 sales brochure posted by Chuck Hess 2/24/2006 which mainly talked about Oliver's No. 1 Universal patternmakers vise (which I have and posted about) but also in the back listed nine other Oliver vises, some quick-releasing, some not. I note that my 153 falls numerically in the middle of that list of nine ( but just after the last quick-releasing one). Interesting and meaningless. Vise weighs about 43#.
(As an aside to the above, ran across a Nov. 9, 1909 U.S. patent issued to Walter Y. Mentzer of Grand Rapids, MI and assigned to Oliver Machinery Company for a new quick-acting woodworking vise. The application was filed 7/10/1909.Found the patent at the Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents website datamp.org/patents/…. Don't know if he was Oliver employee or what.)
