I acquired this machine in Pittsburgh, on New Years Eve 2001. I had won an eBay auction for my Unisaw and traveled east to pick it up. The seller restores old machinery as a hobby (in addition to woodworking), and showed me around his shop. I mentioned that I was also looking for a planer to replace my 12" portable. He had a beautiful Delta 18" wedgebed that was unfortunately just too much machine for me. I was on my way out the door with the Unisaw, when he says that he has a buddy across town with an old Powermatic for sale.

The next morning, I met his friend, and found this planer. This is the predecessor to the M-16 and the Model 16, which is the Model 18's little brother. It is cast iron to the floor, and weighs in at over half a ton. It has a 5 hp single phase RI motor that takes about twenty seconds to get up to speed, and sounds like the motor used to start jet engines--not really loud, just really cool.

It took us over an hour in the snow to load it into the back of my F-150--along with the Unisaw. Let's just say that I didn't need any sandbags to keep down the back end of the Ford on the trip back home.

The date is taken from the inspection tag inside the magnetic starter box, and the manual which Powermatic supplied is spec'd "For serial numbers 7001 up," and is dated July 1952.

This planer was traded to Eric Tuck in the spring of 2009, and is for sale as of 1 June 2009.
