Comments:
This patent vise belongs to Chris Casanova, Sr., who provided us with the photos. The vise bears the patent dates , "MAY 28, NOV 26, DEC 17 1867", corresponding to patents 65,114, 71,498, and 72,327. That last patent was reissued in November 1873 and it seems likely that this vise dates from December 1867 to sometime in 1874 or '75 (it normally takes a year or so for the patterns to be updated with a new patent date and then the new castings to be poured, aged and machined into finished products). The patented feature from that last patent is a screw in the ball-end of the vise screw that can be used to hold the vise handle in in a fixed position. The screw hole is there but the screw itself is missing.
