Comments:
Originally acquired by my father from the San Diego Zoo as surplus around 1952 - they had 4 of them and only needed one - this one was represented as being broken and Dad got it for free. Since he didn't have room for it at the time, he asked my grandfather to store it at his Foundry. Grandpa hooked it up and decided there was nothing wrong with it, used it in his pattern shop until 1982 when the foundry closed. Dad reacquired it and moved it to his house where it was used infrequently - then gave it to me in 2002. Close inspection revealed it was only missing one rubbing block on the lower guide - easy fix. Don't know why the Zoo thought it was broken. I use it to make patterns for my home foundry and to rough cut aluminum for my CNC Mill.
I moved it to Joshua Tree, CA when I retired - still use it almost daily. The pic shows a second motor attache to the front of the base - it's actually a rotary phase convertor since the saw's original motor is 1 hp 3-phase.
I grew up working in Grandpa's foundry. in 1974 he made me patternmaker and I used this saw daily. So glad to actually own it now - still cant be beat.
