Comments:
Didn’t have to do anything to this grinder when I bought it other than dress the wheels, modify the stand, and buff the housing with some Meguiar’s cleaner wax. Mechanically was in excellent condition. I believe that is due to how well it was designed. Uses two sealed ball bearings instead of bushings in the shaft assembly. Sears literature reports no-load speed of 3580 rpm’s on a similar 1/2 hp grinder with 6” grind wheels. Very smooth running. Wheels continue to turn 4 minutes after shutting the grinder off. That’s incredible for a nearly 50 year old machine. Aluminum housing and die-cast aluminum base and side covers. “Commercial” designation (Model 397.19440) as it can operate on 115 or 230 volts. Otherwise, same in every other way as a Model 397.19441 as far as I can tell.

Comments: Striking how inferior the average bench grinder of today looks when comparing it to this model. Solid construction and meant to last. The paint even rivals an automotive finish!

Comments: (Before Photo) Kudos to previous owner for creativity. As you can see from previous photo, I modified the stand by cutting off the outer portion of the hub and mounting what remained to a scrap of treated lumber. The tire was too big in diameter.
