Thanks to Michael Lebrun for providing us with the photos of his new lathe. This lathe is reminiscent of a Model 160 lathe from General Mfg. Co. of Drummondville, Quebec. But the school name cast into the bed is solid evidence that this lathe was manufactured as a project at École technique de Montréal, a technical/vocational high school that existed under that name between 1907 and 1958, when it became l'Institut de technologie de Montréal and in 1968 was integrated into Cégep du Vieux Montréal.
The bed casting says, "ECOLE TECHNIQUE — TECHNICAL SCHOOL / MONTREAL" and the door in the base, below the headstock, says "ETM". The headstock has a Morse taper (MT2). The previous owner had an adapter made that fits around the spindle nose to provide a 1" x 8 TPI internal thread which is the most common attachment style on wood lathes of this size. The MT2 taper is still accessible with this adapter fitted. The lathe was also equipped with an electronic variable-speed drive although that was removed for transport and is not shown in these photos.
Quebec's public school system consists of Kindergarten through Grade 11, followed by two, or perhaps three, years of CEGEP, followed by university. CEGEP is an acronym for (in French) General and Professional College, but is commonly rendered as a word, cegep.
