Bought this shaper used in 2019. The machine came with the standard pinned fence but was lacking fine adjustment that is desired on shaper fences. I ordered an optional fence from Hofmann that has mechanical digital readout and fine adjustment. This fence is accurate to 0.3mm and almost as easy to set up as my automatic fence on my Martin shaper. With no worry of electronics. The other change I made was making a new bracket to hold the power feed to mount on the right side. The post to swing the fence out to allow a tenon hood for cutters more than 250mm is on this side and made an extended 1” thick plate to allow the feeder to clear the fence. Hofmann originally had a swing away feeder mount on the left side but it was awkward to use and limited the stroke of the sliding table.
Some features of this machine is solid cast construction making it my smoothest running machine, HSK shafts in 30 and 40 mm diameters, 6 speed via 2 speed motor and belt change 3000 to 10000 rpm. A nice feature of this machine is the fence swivels all the way around to use as a bump stop for tenoning or end cutting using cutters less than 250mm diameter. The shaft tilts 45 degrees forward and 5 degrees back. Typical of German shapers of that era. By swiveling the fence out to all the way around it’s possible to get 45 degrees back tilt.
The sliding table rides on linear guides and lifts up and over the table to be positioned close to the cutter. When not tenoning it can be used as a table extension.
