Was given this drill press in early 1990's from a doctor in Waukegan, Illinois, (moved it to southeast Michigan). He had purchased a new drill press and this one was not working. Original motor was not working, lubrication of spindle shaft was gummed-up, and tension spring was broken. Was able to order a spring for a 1990's era drill press and modify it to fit in this Atlas tension apparatus. Re-lubed spindle parts. Put in a Dayton, 1/2 HP, single phase motor. Replaced motor pulley which was bent. This press has a full tilting table and a 70-1/2" Jacobs Chuck. For woodworking I made an enlarged wooden table with a movable fence, and hinges for forward tilting if angled drilling is needed. This drill press has really worked well for my needs. I use it about 2 times a month, mostly for woodworking or rotary wire brushing of corroded metal parts. Used it as a makeshift lathe to make wooden handle for vintage hand crank bench grinder. I love this machine. From Machine Info publications, it appears that this Model 74 was made from about 1946 to 1948.
